Kids on Bikes

September 3, 2011

I’ve long been a believer that we should turn our roads over to kids and their bikes. Along that line of thinking, it’s likely not a surprise that we found a long cul-de-sac on which to live. At the bottom, in fact. The clincher when we looked at the house was that our (at the time) two children were dragged out onto the street by kids in the neighborhood and hordes of children rode up and down on bicycles. Our older two did this for many years. They now commute to school by bicycle, but the pattern is repeating itself.

Earlier this week, the littlest velonista and I went to New Hope Bike Co-op and got her her first two-wheeler. Since buying it on Wednesday morning, she’s already spent several hours riding up and down and around. It’s all she wants to do. I finally got the video camera out this evening to record this for family in distant places, but thought it might be worth adding here. I love the utter joy on her face. And how she’s still learning to ride…
