Today’s Ride: 43km—Jerseyville, Orkney

Weather: Cold, windy

Probably not as cold or as windy as it seemed, but having spent the morning working, I was cold before setting out. The wind seemed to bite and the air seemed to have a bit of a winter’s bite. I left leaving a bit late—didn’t get out of the house before 14:30, and with sunset at 17:12, it was always going to be a quick ride.

I spent the ride alternating between feeling tired and feeling very strong. By the midway point, I’d found an efficient stroke and the pace (and comfort) picked up markedly.

I put a new chain and brake pads on the bike yesterday. Maybe a bit overdue, but the whole bike felt brand new and better for it. It’s not as though I was having trouble changing gears—I wouldn’t have stood for that—but was surprised by how much smoother the bike felt. All is right with the world…
