They Grow Up So Fast

May 9, 2012

Just spent the past hour running up and down our road alongside the littlest velonista as she found herself pedalling on two wheels quite happily and comfortably. She won’t be 4 for another couple of weeks, and I can’t help thinking that it won’t be long before another kid leaves me in the dust on family rides. Nice moment, though. Watching the joy of discovery and satisfaction in her face and experiencing my own pride at the same time. And then also imagining the new freedoms and possibilities this new landmark promises. New cycling horizons ahead. Good ones.

Being there with your child at the cycling rite of passage is very special. Our second daughter would look behind her with me holding onto the seat and say, “Now, no funny business.” They all seem to learn differently and there is a rush of joy when they realize they are on their own two wheels.

I’ve been beaming about this for over a week. A very exciting moment for her, but also for Dad.
